Pedophilia is the attraction to prepubescent children (mainly ages 13 and under) by adults and teenagers, with the exception of relationships or attractions between teenagers and 12-13 year olds. Pedophilic disorder however is a psychiatric disorder that occurs when clinically significant distress and/or criminal behavior is caused by pedophilia. Some, but not all, perpetrators of child sex abuse are pedophiles, and most pedophiles don't commit child sex abuse.

This is not to be confused with similar attractions to anyone under 13 years of age, such as:

• Nepiophilia is the attraction by anyone to babies and toddlers.
• Hebephilia is the attraction by adults to early pubescent children, roughly ages 11-14.
• Ephebophilia, which is the attraction by adults to late pubescent children.
